Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, answered.

We understand that reaching out for therapy can feel overwhelming. Here are answers to the most common questions we receive to help you feel more prepared and comfortable.

Getting Started

If you’re experiencing emotional distress, relationship challenges, anxiety, depression, trauma, or simply want personal growth, therapy can be beneficial. Common signs include feeling overwhelmed, struggling with relationships, having difficulty coping with life changes, or feeling stuck in patterns. Our free consultation helps determine the best approach for your specific needs and ensures a good therapist match.

Your first session is about getting to know each other. We’ll discuss your goals, current concerns, personal history, and what brought you to therapy. Your therapist will explain their approach and answer any questions you have. This is also your opportunity to assess if you feel comfortable with your therapist. You can get to know them a bit beforehand. The session is completely confidential and there’s no pressure. It’s about finding the right fit for your healing journey.

Consider factors like specialization (trauma, couples, family), therapeutic approach, gender preference, and personal comfort. Read therapist profiles, consider their training and experience with your specific concerns. Most importantly, trust your instincts about who feels like a good fit. We offer brief consultations to help you make this important decision.

Yes, therapy is strictly confidential. Everything discussed in sessions is protected by professional ethics and legal requirements. The only exceptions are if there’s risk of harm to yourself or others, suspected child abuse, or if records are subpoenaed by court order. Your therapist will explain confidentiality limits clearly in your first session.

Practical Information

We work with most major insurance providers including Blue Cross, Manulife, Great-West Life, and many others. We offer direct billing where possible to make the process seamless. Our administrative team can help verify your coverage, explain your benefits, and assist with claim submissions. We also provide receipts for out-of-network reimbursement.

Our fees vary by therapist and session type. Most therapy ranges from $140-180 per session. We accept credit cards, e-transfer, and direct insurance billing. Payment is due at time of service. We also offer sliding scale options for those experiencing financial hardship. Please discuss this with your therapist.

Standard individual sessions are 50 minutes. EMDR and specialized trauma sessions may be longer (90 minutes) to allow for proper processing and grounding. Your therapist will discuss session length that works best for your specific needs and treatment goals.

We require 24-hour notice for cancellations to avoid being charged. Emergency cancellations are handled case-by-case. No-shows or same-day cancellations may be charged the full session fee. We understand life happens and try to be flexible while maintaining boundaries that allow us to serve all our clients effectively.

Therapy Process

The duration varies greatly based on individual needs, goals, and circumstances. Some clients find relief in 6-12 sessions for specific issues, while others benefit from longer-term support lasting several months to years. Trauma therapy often requires more time for processing and integration. We regularly review progress together and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

Our therapists are trained in various evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), EMDR for trauma, Gottman Method for couples, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and somatic approaches. We use an integrative approach, combining methods that best serve your unique situation and preferences.

Most clients start with weekly sessions to build momentum and establish the therapeutic relationship. As progress is made, sessions may become bi-weekly or monthly. Frequency depends on your needs, goals, life circumstances, and what feels sustainable. Your therapist will work with you to find the right rhythm for your healing journey.

Therapeutic fit is crucial for success. If you don’t feel comfortable after a few sessions, please discuss this openly with your therapist or contact our office. We can help you transition to another therapist in our collective who might be a better match. There’s no shame in finding the right fit – it’s an important part of the process.

Specialized Services

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy for trauma and PTSD. It helps the brain process traumatic memories that have become ‘stuck.’ Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements or tapping), EMDR helps reduce the emotional charge of traumatic memories, allowing for natural healing and integration.

Yes, we specialize in couples and family therapy using approaches like Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). We help with communication issues, conflict resolution, intimacy concerns, parenting challenges, and family dynamics.

Reproductive grief counseling provides specialized support for pregnancy loss, miscarriage, stillbirth, infertility, failed IVF cycles, and related reproductive challenges. Our therapists understand the unique nature of this grief and provide compassionate, informed care that honors your experience and supports your healing process.

Yes, we offer secure video therapy sessions through encrypted platforms that meet healthcare privacy standards. Online therapy can be just as effective as in-person sessions and offers flexibility for busy schedules or those in remote locations. We’ll help you set up the technology and ensure you have a private space for sessions.

Crisis & Emergency Support

If you’re having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, please reach out immediately: Call 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), go to your nearest emergency room, or call 911. For urgent but non-emergency support, contact your therapist directly or our crisis line. We want you to stay safe and get the help you need.

While we can’t provide ongoing crisis counseling between sessions, we do offer brief check-ins for clients experiencing acute distress. Your therapist will provide you with their emergency contact protocol and local crisis resources. We also work closely with psychiatric services when medication support might be helpful.

Each therapist has their own protocol for urgent situations, which they’ll share with you. This typically includes emergency contact information, crisis resources, and safety planning. We take your safety seriously and will work with you to develop coping strategies and support networks for difficult times between sessions.
